Diet for many years has been considered a general health determinant. Recent research shows a connection between gut microbiota composition that is shaped by our diet and lifestyle diseases. Plasma trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) originates from gut bacteria metabolism of dietary l-carnitine, betaine, and choline. A number of studies suggest a positive correlation between elevated plasma trimethylamine N-oxide levels and a risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer. Recent experimental and clinical evidence shows that TMAO may serve as a diagnostic and prognostic marker of many pathologic conditions.
