Abstract

This article discusses addiction psychiatry training in India and provides answers to four main questions: whether the country has a formal addiction training program, the duration of the training program, the approving authority, and the number of addiction specialists in the country. The article explains that psychiatry training in India includes limited exposure to addiction medicine, and there is wide variability in where patients seek treatment. Addiction medicine exists as a separate unit or department under psychiatry in a few central institutes, and there are two types of authorities that can approve addiction psychiatry training programs. However, there is little economic incentive for psychiatrists to specialize in addiction medicine, and the field is still relatively new in India. The article concludes by discussing the possibilities for harmonization of training and the potential future significance of addiction medicine in the country. [Extracted from the article]
