Abstract

Qand-i Nabāt is a phrase composed of two Arabic words. This phrase consists of the word kand meaning “sugar” and the word nabāt meaning “plants”. Considering that the phrase refers to “Binā” subjects in Arabic grammar, it is likely to be an allegory about the importance of the building in Arabic grammar in the sense of “the sugar essence of plants”. “Binā” is a work prepared to teach the basic knowledge of Arabic word grammar. Written in the 12th century or later, the book, whose author is unknown, was taught and memorized in Ottoman madrasas for centuries. Along with “Emsile”, “Binā” is also known as “grammar sentence”, which is considered the basis of Arabic language learning. As far as can be determined, Qand-i Nabāt, which deals with the subjects of Binā in verse, was written in the 17th century as it is hidden in the content of the work. Qand-i Nabāt may have been written by one of the Jalīlīs mentioned three times in the work, but we cannot be sure which one. When tezkires and biographical sources are analyzed, no poet with a work called Qand-i Nabāt was found among the authors who used the pseudonym Jalīlī. What makes Qand-i Nabāt unique is that it is a verse account of Binā in Turkish. There are Arabic works on not only a part of sarf but also Arabic grammar or Turkish poems written Arabic-Turkish dictionaries. However, Qand-i Nabāt is important in that it is a Turkish work in verse about the Arabic usage of the period in which it was written (17th century) and reflects the language of the period and the shedding light on the period when activities to facilitate Arabic teaching through memorization began. The aim of the edition critique is to bring the work into the scientific acquis. Aiming to teach and memorize Arabic grammar in a shorter period, some Arabic grammar in verse are several thousand couplets long and have attracted interest over the centuries. Ibn Mālik’s Alfiya is undoubtedly one of the most famous of these. In the case of Qand-i Nabāt, it is possible to give credit to the fact that the grammatical structures of a foreign language were poetized in Turkish. Undoubtedly, no matter how long it is explained, a commentary will still be needed to understand these texts because they are in verse. In Qand-i Nabāt, it is stated that “sarf” has thirty-five chapters and these are explained. All of them are touched upon: 6 from sülāsī mücerred, 12 from sülāsī mezīd, 1 from rubāī mücerred, 3 from rubāī mezīd, 6 from the titles annexed to rubāī mücerred, and 7 from the titles annexed to rubai mezid. A style that facilitates memorization is used. Titles used for necessity, conjunctive, mutavaat, and accusative are mentioned separately. Although it is in verse, it is noteworthy that it deals with the topics without skipping. Moreover, the poet even touches upon two mutaddi verbs, which are exceptions to the one title used for the imperative. Some recommendations are embedded in the text, including invitations to prayer, fasting, salutation and peace be upon the Prophet (pbuh). After describing the thirty-five titles of Binā, it is described as “the mother of sciences”. In the postscript of some copies, explanations are given for the Arabic words used in the text. The text of Qand-i Nabāt was obtained through the edition critique of eight copies. In the text, the last letters of some verbs are omitted to conform to the meter. In a few places, the poet took the initiative to preserve the harmonic structure of the poem with its meter and rhyme scheme. Persian words and phrases are used in the work, and the pronunciations of these words are explained by the annotators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
