Abstract

This article discusses the results of a study on the use of platelet transfusions before central venous catheter (CVC) placement in patients with thrombocytopenia. The study found that withholding platelet transfusion in these patients increased the risk of CVC-related bleeding. The study was conducted in the Netherlands and included 411 CVC placements. The authors suggest that platelet transfusions should be considered for haematology patients with platelet counts below 30 × 10^9/L, but further research is needed to determine the optimal platelet count for invasive procedures. It is important to note that this study only applies to CVC insertion and not other invasive procedures. [Extracted from the article]
