Abstract

"St Peter-on-the-Wall: Landscape and Heritage on the Essex Coast" is a book that explores the history and landscape of the Dengie Peninsula in Essex. The book includes 14 papers that cover various time periods, from the Roman period to the present day. It examines the significance of the Roman fort of Othona and the coast in the establishment of a religious community at St Peter's church. The book also discusses the modern landscapes of the peninsula, including the rediscovery and restoration of St Peter's church in the 19th and 20th centuries. Additionally, it addresses the controversial role of the peninsula as the location of a nuclear power station and its potential impact on the area. Overall, the book argues that the archaeology, history, and contemporary perceptions of the peninsula should be considered in discussions about future nuclear development.
