Abstract

How can the overrepresentation of school failure among the Roma students be explained? Various educational stakeholders often offer interpretations influenced by prevailing biases and perceptions, which in turn shape their proposed solutions. This article aims to challenge inaccurate assumptions and caution against the uncritical adoption of “cross-cultural” discourse in addressing this matter. A critical aspect emphasized here is the necessity for a systemic explanation, as advocated by John Ogbu, which considers the intricate interplay between macrolevel structural factors and micro-level relational dynamics. By adopting such an approach, we can better comprehend the root causes of Roma students’ educational challenges and formulate more effective interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
