Abstract

The study "The Church Registers and National Socialist 'Genealogy' in the Diocese of Hildesheim" by Maik Schmerbauch examines the role of church registers in the context of National Socialist "genealogy" research. The author analyzes the church register archive in the Diocese of Hildesheim and demonstrates the complicity and competition among various actors, including the Reich Genealogical Office, political communities, and National Socialist associations. The establishment of the church register archive was a clever move by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens to maintain control over the church registers and protect them from National Socialist ideology. The study provides insights into the work of church register archive director Ferdinand Keseling and other protagonists. [Extracted from the article]
