Abstract

Ximena Velez-Liendo, a conservation biologist, has been working to protect Andean bears in Bolivia. These bears are vulnerable due to habitat loss and conflicts with humans. Velez-Liendo conducted a countrywide assessment to estimate the bear population and identify areas where they face the greatest threats. She started a program to train farmers as beekeepers, providing them with income and reducing conflicts between bears and humans. Thanks to her efforts, the bear population in Tarija has increased, and Velez-Liendo plans to expand her program to other regions. [Extracted from the article]
