Abstract

Fort Lauderdale's skyline is being transformed by the construction of a 29-story mixed-use tower, which includes a four-star Omni Hotel. This project is notable for its innovative solutions in handling the complexities of urban development. Balfour Beatty contracted Baker Construction to handle the turnkey concrete package, which involved constructing the hotel, office and convention center space, and a parking garage. The project faced logistical challenges due to its location near the Broward County Convention Center and Port Everglades, resulting in heavy traffic. The project also had to overcome obstacles such as a hydrostatic structural slab, multiple core walls, and various elevated slab configurations. Despite these challenges, extensive planning and collaboration allowed the project team to complete their work on schedule in April 2024. The project required a significant amount of concrete, rebar, and post-tension cable. Once completed in 2025, the hotel and expanded convention center space are expected to have a positive economic impact on the region and contribute to the iconic skyline of Fort Lauderdale.
