Abstract

This article examines the fiscal costs of illegal immigration in the United States. It argues that due to their lower levels of education and resulting lower incomes, illegal immigrants are a financial burden on public budgets. The article also discusses the size of the illegal immigrant population, their use of welfare programs, and the costs associated with education and healthcare. It suggests that encouraging unemployed Americans to join the workforce could help address the fiscal costs of illegal immigration. The article acknowledges that illegal immigrants pay taxes, but argues that their contributions do not cover the cost of the public services they consume. It also discusses the recent increase in illegal immigration and its impact on social services. The article concludes that the negative fiscal impact of low-wage workers is a reality in any society with a large welfare state, and calls for an immigration policy that aligns with the current economic situation and is enforced.
