The paper offers a review of the development of the work of Alberto Manzi, pedagogue, television teacher and children's book writer. Beginning with some choices made in the production of the well-known RAI program "Non è mai troppo tardi," it shows how the "maestro degli italiani" set much of his work focusing on the importance of the image as a medium in relation to the written and spoken word. The educator thus anticipated fundamental themes such as that of visual literacy, particularly decisive in a historical period in which visual media erode the secular power of print, basing his reflection on studies not only pedagogical but also iconological and mediological.
