Abstract
- The article discusses the political influence of Tim Dunn, an oil magnate and member of Midland Bible Church, in Texas and nationally. Dunn's religious beliefs, influenced by comic book narratives, drive his political engagement and he has become the largest donor in Texas politics, supporting extreme right-wing causes and candidates. With his recent sale of his fracking business, Dunn has amassed a $2 billion war chest and is now backing Donald Trump's bid for the presidency in 2024. He is also funding groups that aim to roll back reproductive rights and blur the line between religion and politics. Dunn's fusion of comic-book morality and Christian supremacy is essential to understanding his extreme beliefs. Alongside another billionaire, Farris Wilks, Dunn has established a political machine in Texas that includes a think tank, campaign funding, and a ranking system to track politicians' votes. Their agenda includes enacting strict abortion laws, limiting access to explicit books in schools, and promoting Christian values in public life. Critics argue that their ultimate goal is to impose a theocracy in Texas. Despite controversy and scandals surrounding some of the organizations and PACs Dunn is involved with, he has expanded his influence nationally, becoming a major donor to pro-Trump Super PACs and investing in micro-targeted political ads. Both critics and supporters acknowledge his significant influence and warn against underestimating his ambitions. [Extracted from the article]
