Abstract

This article discusses two books, "The Politics of Imperial Memory in France, 1850–1900" by Christina B. Carroll and "Mobilizing Memory: The Great War and the Language of Politics in Colonial Algeria, 1918–1939" by Dónal Hassett, which contribute to the field of French studies by examining the role of memory in French imperial history. Carroll's book focuses on the Second Empire and early Third Republic, analyzing how memory shaped the concept of empire during this period. Hassett's book explores the use of memory in the political culture of interwar Algeria, particularly in relation to the First World War. Both books shed light on the complexities of colonial memory politics in France. [Extracted from the article]
