Abstract

The article explores the need for Community Review Boards (CRBs) in academic medical research to ensure fairness and address ethical concerns. It argues that Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) may not adequately represent the communities being studied, leading to miscommunication and unethical practices. CRBs, composed of community members, can give a voice to the public and increase trust in the medical system. The article emphasizes the importance of community input, informed consent, and transparent communication in research, and suggests ways to incorporate CRBs into the research process. It references several studies on chatbot-based genomic research consent, interactive informed consent, and ethical issues surrounding adolescent assent and reconsent for biobanking.
