Most menstruating people have probably experienced mood swings or episodes of irritability at the end of their menstrual cycle. However, for 2 to 5% of them, these symptoms are more pronounced, handicapping their daily lives. They are similar to severe depression that may contain suicidal ideation. This is what is now known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
