Abstract

This contribution deals with the professional, academic, personal and political profile of the first judges of the American Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Austria, as well as the Constitutional Courts of Germany and Italy in the Post-World War II period, and that of Spain during the political transition. Despite the differences between the historical contexts and systems of constitutional jurisdiction, the fact that they were all Courts created at the founding moments of a new regime, in which they played a political and cultural role, had an impact on the profile of their members. The comparative study reveals some common characteristics: they were men with legal training, political relations, institutional experience, and often involved in the constituent and legislative work prior to the creation of the Court.
