Abstract

The article discusses the § 179D deduction, which allows owners of commercial buildings to reduce their taxable income by making energy efficiency upgrades. The deduction has two options: the general deduction for energy efficient commercial building property (EECBP) and the alternative deduction for energy efficient building retrofit property (EEBRP). Both options require a plan to install upgrades that improve the building's energy efficiency by 25 percent or more. The article provides details on the requirements, calculations, and allocation of the deduction, and suggests that commercial building owners consult with professionals to determine if the deduction is appropriate for them.
