Abstract

The article discusses the innovation race between democratic nations and autocracies, challenging the belief that autocracies are incompatible with innovation. While autocratic governments can quickly mobilize resources and suppress opposing perspectives, history and research show that democracies consistently outperform autocracies in innovation in the long term. The article highlights the importance of mission-driven entrepreneurship and public-private partnerships in fostering innovation in democracies. It also provides insights and strategies for mission-driven entrepreneurs to effectively work with the government, including aligning with the government's mission, understanding government processes, customizing solutions, learning the language of government, and preparing for the long haul.
