Small intestine bacterial overgrowth syndrome (SIBO) is a syndrome of gastrointestinal symptoms caused by the presence of an excessive number of bacteria in the small intestine. The condition often coexists with other gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or celiac disease. The symptoms are not specific and can be confused with other diseases, which is why proper diagnosis is so important. Diagnosis of SIBO is based on breath tests and culture of small bowel aspirate. And treatment consists of antibiotic therapy, diet therapy (usually low-FODMAP) and elimination of possible contributing factors. It is worth emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to treatment and further research on the optimal diagnostic and therapeutic standards for patients with SIBO that still leave questions.
