Abstract

The turbulent situation in Nicaragua the late 1970s constituted a significant challenge for the military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983). Divided into often opposing sectors, they developed various evaluations, found different motivations and, consequently, promoted different activities related to the Central American country. This article seeks to contribute to the broader debate on Argentine extraterritorial activities during the last dictatorship by focusing on the foreign relations between Nicaragua and Argentina (1977-1979) and delving into the motivations for said activities. It does so through the reading and detailed analysis of an extensive corpus of documents from the Argentine Foreign Ministry. I argue that among the variables that explain the "erratic and contradictory" foreign policy towards Nicaragua, the type of diplomacy involved (military, economic or official) and the specific historical moment (before or after the Nicaraguan revolution) must be taken into account. This analysis stands in sharp contrast to previous works that analyze only one cause - the persecution of Argentine exiles in revolutionary Nicaragua - or only one sector of the Armed Forces - the nationalists or "hardliners".
