Abstract

This article examines the careers of two female concert organists, Henrietta Willmore and Lilian Frost, in late Victorian Australia. The author presents evidence from contemporary newspapers that demonstrates a generally positive attitude towards women performing on the organ during this period. The success of these women organists was attributed to the prevailing spirit of individualism in late Victorian Australia, where there were few male organists at the same level of training and experience. However, as more male organists entered the field, support for women diminished. Willmore and Frost are highlighted as significant figures in organ culture worldwide, similar to the later American phenomenon of "Rosie the Riveter." [Extracted from the article]
