Abstract

China's military spending is much higher than what it publicly reports, according to new research by the American Enterprise Institute. The Chinese government excludes certain military activities, such as the budget for the coast guard, from its self-reported military expenses. The research estimates that China's military budget could have been as high as $711 billion in 2022, triple its publicly stated budget and nearly equal to the US defense spending that year. The US needs to invest more in its own military to counter China's growing combat power and ensure it can effectively deter adversaries. [Extracted from the article]
