Abstract

This article examines the problem of fabricated citations in AI-generated writing, focusing on large language models like ChatGPT. The author argues that these fake citations reveal issues with both the processing of natural language training data and writing in general. The implications of these false citations for the future of writing and the ethics of accreditation are explored, as well as the limitations and potential dangers of ChatGPT. The article discusses concerns in various fields, such as finance and medicine, and addresses the debate surrounding AI-generated text in scholarly manuscripts and the legal responsibilities of authors. It concludes by discussing the nature of language models and their relationship to human language, suggesting that they are fulfilling poststructuralist predictions about the future of literature. The article also explores the use of language models, specifically the LLM, in generating text and the issues that arise from it. It introduces the concept of "hallucination" to describe the inaccuracies and fabricated citations produced by AI models, while also discussing the controversy surrounding this term and proposing alternative designations. The challenges posed by AI-generated text and their implications for authorship, plagiarism, and privacy are highlighted, emphasizing the need for ethical considerations and a deeper understanding of the role of AI in textual technologies.
