Abstract

The article discusses the challenges in diagnosing non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI), a rare condition that primarily affects critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). The lack of specific symptoms and established biomarkers makes it difficult to diagnose NOMI, leading to high mortality rates. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is the standard diagnostic tool for acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI), but its accuracy is low for NOMI. The authors suggest that colonoscopy can be a useful complementary diagnostic tool for confirming or ruling out colon ischemia, particularly in ICU patients. [Extracted from the article]
