Abstract
- The article discusses how working holiday visas in Australia now include cleanup after cyclones as a permitted activity for backpackers. This change was made in response to recent cyclones and flooding in Northern Queensland. However, the article highlights the increased risk of exposure to melioidosis, a potentially fatal bacterial infection, during cleanup operations due to contact with contaminated water and soil. The author suggests that future travel health advice for backpackers should include preventive measures, treatment of wounds, and the importance of seeking medical attention if feeling unwell.
