Abstract

This article discusses the disruption currently facing local television broadcasters due to the shift towards streaming television and away from cable and satellite viewing. The decline in cable and satellite subscriptions is expected to continue, impacting local communities and threatening the funding and existence of local cable access programming. The consolidation of local news stations is also predicted, with only two stations likely to survive in most markets. Changes in network affiliate programming are expected, with networks relying less on local affiliates and platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix becoming more prominent. The article also provides strategies for news media publishers to adapt to these changes, such as selling connected television (CTV), thinking like a creator, curating existing content, and creating a channel. Overall, the article highlights the opportunities for innovation in the changing local TV landscape and emphasizes the importance of serving local communities effectively.
