Abstract
- Context: The involvement of patients as full partners in various domains of health care is transforming the organization of the health system. In medical education, the involvement of patient partners is deemed to bring real benefits to students' learning. However, this practice is still new and under-researched. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of patient involvement on students' reflexivity in an undergraduate medical course. Methods: We conducted a pre-post quasi-experimental study targeting first-year medical students at Laval University. The intervention consisted of involving patient-trainers in a series of 5 course discussion workshops. Student reflexivity was assessed by comparing pre- and post-intervention scores using a self-administered questionnaire with a reflexivity measure. Results: One hundred and forty-four students participated in the study. The results show a non-significant difference in the variation of reflexivity scores over time (2.73 [−1.47; 6.93], scale from 28 to 168, with higher scores indicating more reflexivity) between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: This project is the first to involve and evaluate the contribution of patient partners in a reflective approach to medical education in Quebec. The results do not demonstrate an effect of patient involvement on the development of reflexivity in medical education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
