Abstract

In 1583, the Candia galleys captured Diego Brochero, corsair of the Order of Malta. Transferred to Venice, his captivity would soon become a top-level diplomatic conflict, involving actors such as the King of Spain, the Turkish sultan, the Pope or the famous merchant Simón Ruiz who, precisely, kept correspondence with unpublished information in his archive about the captivity of his relative. In this article we propose an analysis of the background, development and consequences of this event, of the diplomatic conflict triggered by it and of its relevance when shaping the personality of the corsair, which sheds more light on the character's biography and its impact on Mediterranean diplomatic relations.
