Abstract

The article discusses the book "Uncivil Mirth: Ridicule in Enlightenment Britain" by Ross Carroll, which examines the role of ridicule in Enlightenment thinking and its impact on political life. Carroll argues that ridicule can have both emancipatory and uncivilizing effects, and explores the political and moral implications of laughter and ridicule in society. The book provides a historical perspective on the moral and political utility of ridicule and its relevance to contemporary concerns. In a separate article, Onur Ulas Ince explores the concepts of possessive individualism and imperialism from a Marxist perspective, aiming to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter by focusing on the material aspects of imperial ideology and practice.
