Abstract

This document is a collection of two editorials from the journal Critical Care Medicine. The first editorial discusses the psychosocial outcomes experienced by family caregivers of critically ill patients in the ICU. The authors conducted a longitudinal observational study to identify risk factors for poor psychosocial outcomes among bereaved families. They found that individuals in certain classes of perceived quality of dying and death reported more depressive symptoms, lower mental health-related quality of life, and higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. The second editorial focuses on ICU-acquired weakness (ICUAW), a condition that affects a significant percentage of critically ill patients. The authors discuss the potential causes and mechanisms of ICUAW and highlight the importance of reducing sedation and promoting early mobilization as strategies to improve patient outcomes.
