Abstract

The Zr-2.5Nb alloy pressure tubes manufactured by Water Quenched and Aged (WQA) fabrication route has reportedly exhibited superior resistance against in-reactor dimensional changes. WQA route comprises three consecutive thermo-mechanical treatments viz., solution heat treatment (SHT), cold working and vacuum aging, which govern the final microstructure and therefore fracture toughness of the pressure tube material. This work describes the influence of SHT soaking duration, degree of cold working and aging temperature on the microstructure and fracture toughness of WQA Zr-2.5Nb alloy. WQA pressure tubes are expected to have better resistance to in-reactor dimensional changes. However, if proper care of hydrogen absorption during thermo-mechanical processing is not taken, though resistance to creep will improve expectedly but fracture toughness at ambient temperature will deteriorate.
