Abstract

"The Globalization of Wheat" by Marci R. Baranski is a book that critically examines the research and contributions of Norman Borlaug, a prominent figure associated with the Green Revolution. Baranski argues that the focus on wide adaptation in wheat production, championed by Borlaug, has led to a neglect of small farmers and a disregard for local environmental, cultural, and sociopolitical conditions. The book provides case studies from India, Mexico, the Middle East, and North Africa to highlight the limitations of wide adaptation as a research strategy. Baranski concludes that technologies alone are insufficient for helping smallholder farmers and emphasizes the importance of socioeconomic factors such as land reform, farmer groups, access to markets, and education. This book is recommended for the international-development community and serves as a reminder of the ongoing relevance of Green Revolution research. [Extracted from the article]
