Abstract

The scientific production on the ecclesiastical chapters of the Philippines is, to this day, clearly insufficient, especially when compared with other parts of the Spanish empire. As collegiate bodies, the cabildos reflected the interest of the criollos and beneméritos of Manila to increase their influence through the promotion of their members in the ecclesiastical career. This article focuses on the first period of the government of Miguel de Poblete (1653-1663), eighth Archbishop of Manila (1649-1667), who stands out for his willingness to promote the diocesan --or secular-- clergy to the detriment of religious orders, which had traditionally exercised their hegemony in the archipelago. From a micro-political approach based on the study of primary sources and contemporary and subsequent historiography, this study shows the importance of personal ties of friendship, patronage, and kinship in the constitution of the political family of the Archbishop Poblete, especially through the granting of mass chaplaincies, curates, and prebends.
