Abstract

Physicists have discovered a new type of magnetic material called altermagnets, which could have applications in faster and more efficient computer hard drives. Altermagnets have a unique structure where the spins of neighboring atoms alternate and are also rotated with respect to one another. This special symmetry puts altermagnets in their own class of magnetic materials. Recent experiments have confirmed the altermagnetic behavior of certain materials, and researchers have identified numerous altermagnet candidates. Altermagnets could potentially overcome the limitations of current magnetic materials and revolutionize technology. [Extracted from the article]
