In recent decades, minimally invasive endoscopy has been widely applied in various domains of pediatric surgery. It offers the advantages of minimal trauma, faster recovery and lesser pain. However, minimally invasive surgical incision is not equal to functional minimally invasiveness. This review focused upon the concept of functional minimally invasive surgery and its clinical applications in pediatric surgery. Through a combination of precision medicine, application of new technology and accelerated rehabilitation surgery, treatment outcomes may be optimized with minimal trauma so that quality-of-life is thus improved.
