Claudia von Braunmühl was part of the German State derivation debate. Her contribution focused on understanding the link between the State, the World Market and Imperialism. In this paper we propose to reconstruct and deepen her argument of the primacy of the World Market over States, and then advance in a critique of her perspective. The center of gravity of these is found in the observation of a juxtaposition of the levels of abstraction between the state, the world market and imperialism. We conclude that the juxtaposition of the levels of abstraction triggers a series of problems from which Claudia von Braunmühl fails to overcome the classical visions of imperialism.
