Social costs from obesity that need to be addressed by a long-term commitment for funding and research; Examples of attempts to regulate social issues, including the consequences of school policies on junk food and fast food; Rep. Maile Shimabukuro's work with the Hawaii State Legislature's Pediatric Obesity Task Force; Legislative bills that she co-sponsored, including one for nutrition standards in public schools; Texas' policy on the school breakfast and lunch program and other efforts to fight obesity in schoolchildren.
