Abstract

A study published in the journal Plant Cell explores the role of SUPPRESSOR OF MAX2 (SMAX)1-LIKE (SMXL) proteins in regulating growth in the moss Physcomitrium patens. The researchers found that SMXL proteins act as negative growth regulators in the moss, functioning downstream of MAX2 in the KL signaling pathway. They also discovered that SMXL proteins do not act as repressors in the strigolactone (SL) pathway. The study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms of moss growth regulation and suggests a possible interplay between SL and KL signaling pathways in moss development.
