Abstract

This article reports a case of Brucella abortus RB51 contamination in a platelet product donated by a healthy large-animal veterinarian. Brucella spp. are bacteria that cause brucellosis, a zoonotic infection. The donor had a history of working with dairy cattle and administering the RB51 brucellosis vaccine. The contaminated platelet product was detected and recalled before transfusion. The donor was treated with antibiotics and will be deferred from further donations. The article discusses the risk of transfusion transmission and potential interventions to prevent such occurrences. [Extracted from the article]
