Abstract
- This article discusses the importance of atherosclerosis, a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of fatty and fibrous material in arteries, which can lead to compromised blood flow and tissue ischemia. Atherosclerosis affects multiple vascular beds and is primarily caused by low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. It is the leading cause of vascular disease worldwide and is associated with severe clinical manifestations such as ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease. The article also explores molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for atherosclerosis, including endothelial dysfunction, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress. Additionally, it discusses the role of intravascular imaging in studying and evaluating coronary plaques and the importance of understanding coronary microvascular dysfunction.
