Abstract

Sepsis is characterized as a systemic inflammatory response triggered by inflammatory mediators in response to microbial agents or toxins. Its acute course often rapidly progresses to septic shock and multiorgan dysfunction, thus highlighting the urgency in addressing this complex and potentially fatal condition. Therefore, the aim of the study was to address the relevance of nursing's role in the early identification and treatment of sepsis. The study method consisted of an integrative literature review carried out in the databases Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PUBMED), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Sciences of Health (LILACS) and Web of Science (WoS), during the month of January 2024. The study reinforced the importance of the nursing team in the early identification and treatment of sepsis, contributing to the improvement of clinical results and the reduction of mortality associated with this condition. Therefore, by recognizing nursing as a key player in the multidisciplinary approach to sepsis, this study highlights the need for continuous investments in education and training to enable the nursing team to perform their role even more effectively.
