Abstract

This scientific research article proposes an analytical approach to examine the media representation of culture in local newspapers. Using the Political Economy of Communication (PEC), the author seeks to determine if the dissemination of culture in the local press is primarily driven by commercial considerations and establish connections between cultural representation and media power structures. The study focuses on newspapers in Sevilla and Porto Alegre, analyzing the evolution of the concept of culture in the media throughout history. The importance of the written press in the dissemination of culture and the preservation of local identities is highlighted, as well as the changes in cultural supplements and the reduction of pages in major Spanish newspapers. The comparative study reveals that the most discussed cultural topics are film, music, books, and theater, with differences in focus between the newspapers of Sevilla and Porto Alegre. It is concluded that local media focuses on promoting market culture and does not maintain a critical position regarding public management of culture. [Extracted from the article]
