Abstract
- This article is a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that examine the risk of lower extremity amputation (LEA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) who are taking sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors compared to other glucose-lowering therapies. The study found that there was no significant increase in the risk of LEA for patients with T2DM and PAD who were prescribed SGLT2 inhibitors compared to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). However, SGLT2 inhibitors were associated with a lower risk of LEA compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and a higher risk compared to sulphonylureas. The findings suggest that SGLT2 inhibitors may have potential benefits for patients with T2DM and PAD, but more research is needed to fully understand the risks and benefits of these medications. The report, authored by Gillies, Patrick Highton, Louise Haddon, Safoora Gharibzadeh, Francesco Zaccardi, and Kamlesh Khunti, provides valuable and reliable insights into this specific topic, making it a useful resource for library patrons conducting research.
