Abstract

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is being rebuilt following its collapse on March 26. Salvage teams are preparing to remove a 5,000-ton section of steel and concrete from the grounded container vessel M/V Dali. The Maryland Transportation Authority plans to issue a request for proposals for a new cable-stayed structure, with a goal of having the new crossing open by Fall 2028. The estimated construction cost is between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion, which is in line with similar projects. Funding for the replacement bridge will come from federal sources, insurance proceeds, and other reimbursements. Several design firms have expressed interest in the project, including Italy's Webuild group. The strategy for refloating the Dali is expected to be completed by May 10. Salvage divers are facing challenges due to jagged wreckage and limited visibility underwater. [Extracted from the article]
