Abstract

The article discusses droughts in the Iberian Peninsula and the need to address both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. In the Middle Ages, mitigation focused on prayers and processions, while adaptation was based on the construction of canals and dams. Nowadays, mitigation focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but it is recognized that this requires a global effort. Additionally, the importance of implementing adaptation measures, such as infrastructure construction and cooperation between regions, is highlighted. The need for a coherent and coordinated peninsular or even European plan is mentioned. The article also points out the limitations of global climate models in predicting the impacts of climate change at a regional scale and highlights the complexity and lack of effective planning in response to droughts. The importance of addressing both mitigation and adaptation is emphasized, as global emissions reduction is not guaranteed. [Extracted from the article]
