Abstract

The treatment of reproductive disorders and the promotion of fertility represent cornerstones of the equine and bovine industries. Along with conventional medical treatments, the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has been used to treat reproductive problems for thousands of years in humans, is showing increasing potential through evidencebased studies to treat infertility in animals. In this article, a traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) approach to treatment of infertility in the mare will be presented. Discussion of common TCVM infertility patterns in the sub-fertile mare such as Kidney Qi and Blood Deficiency and Kidney Yin Deficiency will be explored. Review of research studies substantiating evidence-based efficacy of TCVM techniques along with practical tips for acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment for infertility will also be presented.
