Abstract
- This research was carried out to determine the opinions of English teachers working in high schools about the 9th and 10th grade levels of the English lesson curriculum, which has been implemented since 2018. 19 volunteer English teachers who work in high schools that enroll students based on their addresses in the central districts of Gaziantep province and attend classes at the 9-10th grades participated in the research. The research is a qualitative research in which focus group interview technique is used. The interviews were carried out in 5 groups, with an interview form containing 9 semi-structured questions. During the focus group interviews, audio recordings were taken upon the consent of the participants, then the interview recordings were transcribed, and the findings were obtained with the descriptive analysis method. As a result of the research, it was found out that the teachers were satisfied with the 9th grade curriculum, the program was based on 4 basic skills, the program was practical, the themes were aimed at the interest of the students, the teachers only changed the activities when the activities were not suitable for the level of the student; they made it a bit more difficult, while applying the curriculum, they use the textbook, the digital resources offered by the ministry and some mobile applications were used in line with the curriculum. As for the 10th grade level of the curriculum, it was found out that they were not satisfied with the curriculum, the curriculum was very intense, the 4 basic skills were taken as a basis, but there were many activities to increase vocabulary knowledge, the texts were heavy and the activities were long, so there was a time constraint, and the students did not practice on the achievements as much as desired, all the acquirements could not be achieved, and they could just try to train the textbook. On the other hand, it was revealed that they did not use guidebooks for both grade levels because the teacher's guidebook did not arrive at the schools, and they could not use alternative evaluation methods due to the differences in the habits and expectations of the students, parents and school administration. That the English teachers to be taken under in service trainings on the English curriculum, 9th and 10th grade curriculums to be revised and interactive activities to be developed and adapted within the dijital portals offered by the Ministry are suggested by thre researcher.
