Abstract

A full velocity difference car-following model is extended to examine the impact of the driver's psychological headways by considering the memory effect in optimal velocity under the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) environment. Both linear and nonlinear investigations are used to obtain the stability condition and mKdV equation, respectively. Numerical simulations are employed to confirm the theoretical results, allowing us to investigate the evolution of traffic flow when a minor disruption is introduced. By improving the intensity of the driver's memory, the traffic congestion is reduced due to previous information of the driver. In comparison to the FVDM, it is observed that less "psychological headway" can increase stability at greater traffic densities, while bigger "psychological headway" leads to more excellent stability at light traffic densities and this effect becomes more prominent with the involvement of the driver's memory. As a result, the critical advantage of this model over the existing study is that the car-following model with memory effect and "psychological headway" significantly enhances the stability of traffic flow under the V2V communication environment.
