Abstract

A new nuclear reactor at Southern Co.'s Plant Vogtle in Georgia has reached commercial operation, making it the largest nuclear plant in the United States. The completion of the project, which experienced significant cost overruns and delays, has shifted the focus of the nuclear power industry to smaller designs. The two new reactors at Plant Vogtle can each provide power to around 500,000 homes and businesses. While the project faced challenges, there is still potential for future large nuclear projects in the U.S., and utilities are also considering small modular reactors as a cheaper alternative.
