Abstract

Hydropower is a reliable and renewable energy source that can complement intermittent generation from solar and wind. Water-supply variability is a normal occurrence in hydroelectric production, with periods of low and high water levels alternating since the 1960s. Independent studies suggest that climate change may benefit northern hydro systems in Quebec in the long term, increasing water availability for hydropower production. However, there are concerns about the vulnerability of green energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro to the whims of nature, as demonstrated by the drought in Canada and the freeze in Texas. A serious discussion is needed to address the potential constraints of relying on green energy to meet the increasing demand for electric power. [Extracted from the article]
